Blake Mills grew up in Malibu and my good freind's son was in a band with him, they were 4 Malibu High kids and they used to rehearse in the garage and I thought them charming yet still in the nascent stage...fast forward 20 years and my pal tells me that I know Blake Mills....anyway, the dude is a tremendous player... I listen a lot to his sort of funk atmospheric album he made with Pino Palladino called Notes with Attachments...no vocals, nothing poppy...the song Ekute is what grabbed me at first...anyway, he can do it all and yeah, I have heard those Mill's outtakes from the fantastic Rough and Ready, super inversion playing, he has a deft touch and unique approach...cool how Bob found him....

I just heard Silence is Sincerity from Blake Mills Heigh Ho LP, that's what I dig about him, he has these atmospheric liquidy sequences, like running watercolor...no words....so in addition to really digging Rough and Rowdy anyway, like you say, without Mills the LP may have been more straightforward, I don't know....but awareness of Mills is another gift that Rough and Rowdy bestowed ....to make an effort like that at age 80 is crazy good, most artists don't do much after age 60....Picasso, F Dos, those guys...not many more...so love Rough and Ready and its depth of everything puts me in an amazed state
