This is a terrific reminiscence. It brought me back to when I was just a kid sitting on the floor of the basement bedroom I had all to myself growing up in my parent's Connecticut hills home, with my back up against the old, huge console stereo I inherited, listening to a college FM station out of New Haven playing the entire, both sides, no commercials, Big Pink album. I was hooked for life after that. I've not read many articles that pay tribute to them like this, and especially ones about Rick. The Band does not get the appreciation among this generation that it should, but it's articles like this that keep the candle burning.
Seeing Rick in the smaller venues was amazing. In Washington DC the was a place called Desperado’s saw him there in one of the last show before it closed. He and the audience were bantering back and forth . All of a sudden part of the collapsed. He kept it going till it was time to close. From Dylan and the Band at MSG to Watkins Glen tothose solo nights he brought so much joy in my life. Hope they are waiting for me when it’s my time. Thank you for a wonderful article.
I was very close to Rick.. He had this strong Beautiful Angelic voice, right up to his passing. A huge warm Heart .p It Makes No Difference is his and his Alone. Could write a book on him. But don't have the time here. Miss and Love you Rick
Sometime around 1984 I first (and last) saw The Band. It was at a tiny place "Cheek to Cheek" in Winter Park, Florida. Standing room only. I'd been waiting for that opportunity since I first saw Scorcese's The Last Waltz circa 1977-79. Within a day or so after that Cheek to Cheek show, I read news that Richard Manuel had hung himself after that evening's show. Unbelievable! RIP RM - Very grateful to have seen those guys.

The Danko / Helm funk on the first two records still blows me away (Chest Fever, UoCC, King Harvest ...). I play some bass and the feel Rick gets sliding a half-step into his notes is tough to imitate - if ever. Total chemistry. Miss Rick.

Thank you for your wonderful response.
Got to see Rick solo many times a lot at Bottom Line and Towne Crier.
Just totally great and no matter what shape he was in, he always delivered for me. Even when the audience had no idea who was performing.
