Around 25 years ago I stood in a listening booth in a long gone HMV Megastore listening to one song in particular, on repeat, before finally buying the CD that the song appeared on. It was the CD single for “Not Dark Yet,” one of the multiple variations that went on sale after Time out of Mind was released. This variation was pretty rare, version (R-0262), from February 1998 which had a version of “Boots of Spanish Leather” from the 1996 House of Blues concert which quite literally broke my mind. I’d never heard anything that sounded quite like this before. Dylan’s desperate longing conveyed in a raspy cry that seemed to boil up from middle earth, swamped in fire and flames, dancing, or like some crushed heartbroken angel falling from the sky and pulling from the past nostalgic visions of lost love on ships and stormy seas, “take heed, take heed of the western wind, take heed of the stormy weather”.
